The Caribbean region consists of many nations, most of them islands, with very diverse histories and cultures. The first known human inhabitants were called Indians by explorers from Europe, who came from England, France, Spain and elsewhere to colonize these lush tropical paradises. They brought with them slaves from Africa, and the one positive legacy of that tragic period in history has been a musical one.
The African heritage is felt most strongly in the varied rhythms heard from island to island, while the languages are European in origin, albeit often adapted via various forms of patois, or regional dialects. With additional flavoring from the Caribbean itself, the results are unique and have captivated listeners around the globe. People in the Caribbean, whether rich or poor, know how to have a good time, and their music reflects that joie de vivre. Putumayo is pleased to present not only some of the best known musical stars from this region, but also a few artists beloved in their homelands but little known outside of the Caribbean.
